A Place to Pause

Illustrated portrait of Michael sitting at an outdoor table surrounded by trees, with his phone resting nearby.

There is something about sitting outside that quiets the noise.

The phone is still there. The responsibilities have not disappeared. There are people to call, decisions to make, and things waiting for my attention.

But for a few minutes, none of them have to be answered.

I can sit still.

I can notice the light coming through the trees. I can breathe without rushing toward whatever comes next. I can remember that a full life is not measured only by what gets accomplished.

Sometimes it is measured by whether we were present enough to notice we were living it.

I have spent much of my life showing up for other people. I am grateful for that life. But I am also learning that showing up for myself matters too.

Maybe that is what these pauses are really about. Not escaping life, but returning to it with a little more room inside us.

The phone will still be there when I am ready.

For now, I think I will sit a little longer.
